Gas prices from San Diego to Las Vegas

In Vegas it's $3.89 for the 87 octane,  which is all I buy for my Veloster.
In Primm Nevada, about 15 miles from Vegas it's $4.35
In San Diego its $4.29

There is no reason to pay for 89 or 91 unless you get someone to prove to you that the cheapest gas you can buy will damage your engine. If you have a Ferrari, congrats, and pay for the most expensive gas you can get someone to sell you. If you have a 13.5 to 1 compression racing hemi, yup, you'll need some 110 octane. For all the normal cars sold by the big 5 car makers, GM, Ford, VW, Toyota, Honda, you won't need to waste the money on 91 octane. If you know otherwise, feel free to inform me and the other readers, we would like to know how 87 will damage your engine, and 91 won't.

It turns out that a lot of people are impressed with the horsepower measurements their car can achieve on high octane... hell, my 426 runs strictly on 100 octane low lead avgas, and the hp numbers are cool as hell, but new cars with computers will automatically adjust the timing to keep it from pinging when you use less than the highest octane sold at gas pumps. You don't get the same hp, because the timing is backed off from the most performance settings level, but who needs an extra 20 hp at the grocery store parking lot? When you are driving on the freeway at near the speedlimit? You only need the highest performance abilities from your engine when racing, so stop wasting money on 91 octane. It's your income, waste it anyway you want.

Marc looked it up, it's 50% methanol, 30% nitromethane, 18% castor oil, and 2% Klotz oil

Gas prices

I was listening to an XM station and they were reading a letter from a cross country driver, who said that the price was 3.04 in New Mexico, but 4.49 in New York.

Seems like the same thing I found the last time I was driving long distance.

There are several (I think 5) refineries in New Mexico around Roswell, and oil fields there too, that's part of why they have it soooo cheap. New York City? Well, what isn't the highest priced in the nation if not things bought in New York, the culture there priced itself into poverty and prosperity depending on if you own or rent.

Best gas prices in San Diego are averaging $3.52 a gallon

Worst is that gas station in Pacific Beach with 4.39... http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2009/01/sunday-january-11th-2009-gas-prices-at.html was my post of how they were overpriced (2.82) when oil was 38 dollars a barrel, and now that oil is 103, they are 4.39

How is it that oil triples in price and gas doesn't even double in price?

new info about 1937 Chevrolet dealerships installing truck beds in business coupes... I thought that was a thing people had to make for themselves

I've posted about this gas rationing ingenuity before, that a truck was issued more gas rations, and a car less, so some people converted their cars into trucks by just adding a pickup bed where the rumble seat or trunk had been... this is the first I've read about it being done by a dealership... But the owner of this 1937 Chevy business coupe is the 2nd owner and bought this car 40 years ago, so I'll just work with that.

When driving through Barstow California, don't get gas at the Chevron on Barstow Rd Exit, it's 60 cents a gallon more than the Valejo station across the overpass... that is 12 dollars more for 20 gallons, wasted

I've posted before that I believe that some gas stations change the prices highest left to right to get you to accidentally buy the most expensive gas  http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/do-some-gas-stations-try-to-trick-you.html
above are the reversed from normal levels of price gouging at the Chevron, and below, in the normal arrangement, is the Valejo gas station prices

Do some gas stations try to trick you into selecting the more expensive grade, by reversing the normal order of buttons?

Above is the norm around San Diego, and everywhere else in America I've bought gas.... but below is the reverse order that I just noticed.

Loading a Doodlebug in Feb 1934 San Antonio

Found on http://reservatory6.blogspot.com/

The elusive Doodlebug fuel tanker, seeing one photographed in the wild is so rare that this is the first sighting of one in 2 years. (seriously, this is only the 2nd photo I've ever come across)

in 1935 Texaco designed this tanker and had Diamond T truck company make them to provide greater economy, ease of operation, increased visibility, and greater capacity.

Rental car companies are under scrutiny for gas price gouging, USA Today did a story last week

A USA TODAY survey of auto rental gas prices at 13 big airports on April 25 found Hertz was charging $9.29 a gallon at all 13. Dollar and Thrifty were charging $8.99 a gallon at two.

At $9.29 a gallon, Hertz customers renting a Ford Club Wagon, which has a 35-gallon fuel tank, would owe Hertz $325.15 for gas if they returned the wagon with a nearly empty tank and hadn't prepaid for the gas.

Renters who pay ahead of time for a tank of gas from Hertz or another car rental company, though, may find the per-gallon price cheaper than at many local gas stations.

Of 102 prepay prices charged by the eight big car rental companies at 13 airports on April 25, 54 were cheaper than the average price at local gas stations that day. Forty-three prices charged for prepay gasoline were higher, USA TODAY's analysis of rental company prices and the AAA auto club's gas-station data found.

Most or all rental companies' prepay prices were less than the average at local gas stations

Though renters who prepay may pay less per gallon than at local gas stations, it's questionable whether they save money by doing so.

Prepayment is for a full tank of gas and can benefit renters who return vehicles with a nearly empty gas tank. But many renters who pay ahead return vehicles with a substantial amount of gas in the tank and are not credited for it.

1920 method of obtaining gas in Brazil was a department store

The photo above is from 1920, highlighting the "torpedo" a Ford TT.

The coolest thing in this image is the writing on the wall of the warehouse: Custodian of gasoline "Motano"-Standard Oil of Brazil.

So this was the sale of "Gazolina" in the early days! Well before the gasoline pumps, fuel was sold in department stores in brass!
